CTC Restraint Training

Retail

Control for the stop your policy allows.

Loss prevention, a manager, and contract security can all be involved in the same stop. They need a shared language of control.

Most retailers have already narrowed when a physical stop is allowed. Many no longer chase. They observe, document, and refer. CTC does not change that policy. We train the stop the policy still permits.

A stop on a sales floor is public. Customers are watching, and a camera is already running. The pressure is to end it quickly. That is how a detention becomes a tackle, a choke, or several people on someone’s back, often past the doors, often over merchandise worth less than the claim.

The training

One method for the people who are allowed to stop.

  1. Who is trained

Loss prevention, managers your policy already authorizes, and the contract security on that floor. Not every associate. Untrained staff are how a stop leaves the building.

Why CTC only trains the stop.

  • Greeting customers, locking up merchandise, and reviewing video are store decisions. CTC does not teach them.
  • The stop is the moment a person is actually held. That is where an untrained finish becomes a claim, and it is the only part we certify.

What it cost

Stacy Clay Driver, 29, was suspected of exchanging stolen items for store credit. The Houston Chronicle reported that a loss-prevention employee chased him into the parking lot, where he was held face-down and handcuffed, with someone sitting on him. The autopsy called the death a homicide: asphyxia from neck and chest compression, with overheating and methamphetamine toxicity as a contributing factor.

A Harris County grand jury declined to indict anyone. In 2007 the Chronicle reported that Walmart agreed to pay the family nearly $750,000. The customers and the camera were already part of the file. The merchandise was not.

CTC certifies the people your policy already trusts with a stop. Loss prevention, the manager, and contract security use the same hold, so no one is inventing one while the floor is watching.
